You Can Help Create A
Cabinet Level Department of Peace

Participate in an historic citizen lobbying effort to create a U.S. Department of Peace. There is currently a bill before the U.S. House of Representatives (HR808). This landmark measure will augment our current problem-solving options, providing practical, nonviolent solutions to the problems of domestic and international conflict.

On February 5, 2007, legislation calling for a cabinet-level Department of Peace & Nonviolence was re-introduced into the House of Representatives by Congressman Dennis Kucinich. HR808, currently has 60 co-sponsors.

You can read the bill here. The primary focus is to introduce organizing principles of peace in our government and will research, facilitate, and articulate nonviolent solutions to conflict, both domestically and internationally.

As a growing group of Maine citizens who believe that this Bill is a timely response to governmental leadership in the 21st century, it is our intent to continue to organize the voice of the people favorable to this Bill so that it is the Maine people themselves who influence our Congressmen and Senators to co-sponsor this legislation.

If you are compelled to work for the realization of a cabinet level Department of Peace and Nonviolence in our federal government, and a culture of peace in our country and in our world, then join us as we organize and make it good politics for our Congressmen and Senators to support this legislation.

Internationally ~ the Department of Peace will provide the President with specific, proven options for non-violent resolution of conflict and highly sophisticated peacemaking strategies for diminishing violence in our world.

Domestically ~ the Department of Peace will develop policies and allocate resources to effectively reduce the levels of domestic and gang violence, child abuse, and various other forms of societal discord.

The Department of Peace would establish a Peace Academy, patterned after the military academies, where students would learn peaceful conflict resolution skills and, after graduation, would serve in peace-related postings here at home and abroad.

Join us now. Create a Department of Peace.

How You Can
Make It Happen

Regional Leaders work within their communities to garner support for Department of Peace legislation by building a local network of activists to work with congressional offices, interact with local media, and perform outreach and education in their areas.

Congressional Representatives have thousands of bills put before them for consideration during any Congressional session; it is only to be expected that it takes considerable effort to get their serious attention, much less their support for a particular bill. Yet surely the effort is worth it.

The Department of Peace legislation does reflect what Jefferson referred to as “progress of the human mind,” presenting a new model for the amelioration of violence and the waging of peace. As such, it represents both a philosophical as well as political advance for American society. The Department of Peace legislation addresses the political dimension of peace-creation in a crucial way, institutionalizing the interests of peace within the workings of the United States Government. With the creation of a Department of Peace, an established voice for peace will be at the table of American power. This will be our generation’s gift, should we choose to give it: to our nation, to our children, and to the progress of the human mind.

Call or write your representatives: Urge them to support the Department of Peace legislation. The bill was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Congressman Dennis Kucinich on February 5 under the number HR808 with 60 co-sponsors.
